Players Championship 34: late replacement Morris beats Humphries

Tommy Morris has won Players Championship 34 (PC 34) as a late replacement. The Englishman does not hold a Tour Card and made the field via the Challenge Tour. In Leicester he beat Luke Humphries 8-5 in the final and claimed his first PDC ranking title. All the details are in our tournament report on PC 34.

On his way to the final, Morris had already beaten Rob Cross, top seed Wessel Nijman, Jermaine Wattimena and Cristo Reyes, among others. The title also earned him a place at the Grand Slam of Darts. Leicester also brought the qualifying race for the Players Championship Finals in Minehead to an end. For Luke Littler it is now settled that he will be missing: the world champion skipped PC 33 and PC 34. The background is in our report on Littler's missed qualification.

Ricardo Pietreczko was the most successful German starter with his run to the last 16. It was not enough to qualify for the Players Championship Finals, though. He opened with a 6-4 win over Ryan Joyce. Martin Schindler also won 6-4, against Mickey Mansell, while Lukas Wenig came through 6-5 against Filip Bereza. Niko Springer lost 5-6 to Tom Bissell, Dominik Grüllich went down 4-6 to Nick Kenny and Max Hopp 2-6 to Cam Crabtree.

The standout results of the opening round included the wins without dropping a leg by Rob Owen against Dimitri Van den Bergh and Dirk van Duijvenbode against Ryan Meikle. Dave Chisnall, Ryan Searle and Joe Cullen also went out early. Josh Rock, Kim Huybrechts and Charlie Manby each needed a decider to go through. You can find the original pairings in the draw for PC 34.
