Guide
Hanging a dartboard: height and distance
The official measurements, a step-by-step guide and tips for wall protection and lighting
Hung correctly, a dartboard takes about fifteen minutes. Two measurements are key: the height of the Bullseye and the distance to the throwing line. Here you get both values for steel-tip and e-dart, plus the guide and the most common mistakes.
The official measurements
- Steel-tip: centre of the Bullseye 1.73 metres above the floor, throwing line 2.37 metres horizontally from the board, diagonal from the line to the bull centre 2.93 metres.
- E-dart (Germany): centre of the Bullseye 1.72 metres, throwing line 2.44 metres.
- The throwing line (Oche) is measured from the front edge of the board, not from the wall.
How to hang your dartboard
Choose a spot
You need around three metres of depth plus room to stand and at least one metre of width. No door, no window, no lamp directly behind or next to the board.
Mark the height
Using a folding ruler, measure 1.73 metres (e-dart 1.72 metres) up from the floor and mark the bull height on the wall. With carpet or a mat, measure from the final standing surface.
Mount the bracket
Most boards have a metal disc on the back that hooks onto a wall bracket. Set the wall plug and screw so that the Bullseye sits exactly on your mark; many boards have a rotation mark on the back for this.
Align the board
The 20 must be at the top; the number ring can be rotated. The board should sit flat against the wall; adjust with the supplied spacers if needed.
Set the Oche
Measure 2.37 metres (e-dart 2.44 metres) from the front edge of the board and mark the line with tape, an Oche raiser or a dart mat. Check: the diagonal line to the bull is 2.93 metres.
Protect the wall
A catch ring, surround or a cork panel around the board; a floor mat protects against bounce-outs.
Lighting
Light should illuminate the board from the front or from above, without shadows. A ring light around the board or two small spots from above stop your own shadow or the wire from covering your target. Avoid light directly behind the board.
Common mistakes
- Distance measured from the wall instead of the front edge of the board
- Height taken at the top edge instead of the centre of the bull
- Board crooked: the 20 is not directly above the bull
- No wall protection: every stray dart leaves a hole
- Soft-tip dimensions used for a steel-tip board, or the other way round
Which dartboard?
For steel-tip darts a sisal board (bristle board) is the standard: the pressed sisal fibres close the holes again, and with regular rotating the board lasts for years. Look for a thin, round wire spider without staples; it clearly reduces bounce-outs. Paper or cork boards from the toy shelf are riddled with holes after a few weeks. For soft-tip darts you need a machine or an electronic board with plastic segments that suits soft darts of 18 grams maximum.
Mounting without drilling
If you're not allowed to drill, use a dart stand, a door bracket or a cabinet hung on a rail. Stands are free-standing in the room and can be put away; the measurements apply just the same, the base replaces the wall. After setting it up, check the Bull height, because many stands are height-adjustable.
Rotating and caring
Rotate the board by one segment at regular intervals (the number rings are removable) so the heavily played 20 and 19 beds don't wear out on one side. Keep the board dry; moisture makes sisal swell. Occasionally round off your points with a dart sharpener so they hold in the sisal and don't tear the wire.
Frequently asked questions
How high is a dartboard hung?
Steel-tip: the centre of the Bullseye sits 1.73 metres above the floor. Soft-tip in Germany: 1.72 metres.
How far is the oche from the board?
Steel-tip: 2.37 metres, measured from the front edge of the board. Soft-tip: 2.44 metres. In steel-tip the diagonal from the line to the centre of the Bull is 2.93 metres.
How much space do you need for darts?
Around three metres of depth to the oche plus room to stand, at least one metre of width, and no door or window in the throwing area.
How do I protect the wall?
With a surround, a protective mat or a cork panel around the board; a floor mat catches darts that bounce out.
Does the 20 have to be at the top?
Yes. The number ring can be turned; the 20 sits vertically above the Bullseye, the 3 at the bottom.
