Guide
Darts in later life
Sport without wear and tear: focus, good company and competition well into old age
In darts there are players who start at 60 and are winning league matches at 70. The sport demands no strength and no stamina, but calm, concentration and routine. This guide shows how seniors get started, what to look out for and where to find fellow players.
Why darts suits later life
- No strain on knees, hips or heart; the throw comes from the shoulder and elbow
- Mental arithmetic on every visit keeps the brain in practice
- Regular training evenings and league matches bring structure and company
- Progress is measurable: Average and Checkout rate improve with routine, not with strength
Getting started
The route is the same as for any beginner: your own darts, a board set up at the correct measurements, finding your grip and stance, practising Doubles. Anyone who has not stood for long periods in a while should make sure of a stable stance; a non-slip mat helps. If your eyesight is weaker, good board lighting is worth it, and if needed glasses for a distance of just under three metres.
Finding fellow players
Many clubs have training groups in the morning or afternoon where mostly older players are active, plus senior categories at club and association tournaments. Venues with darts nights during the week are a good way in without a membership. On DartCloud you will find clubs and venues near you and can get in touch directly.
Health
If you suffer from shoulder or neck problems, go through your throwing motion with a physiotherapist; the dart throw is a small, repeated movement that encourages tension when your posture is wrong. Warming up with loose shoulder and wrist circles before your first throws, plus regular breaks, is usually enough.
Training that's easy on the joints
Darts puts strain on the shoulder and elbow through repetition, not through force. Warming up with a few loose throws, breaks every 30 minutes and a dart weight you can throw without effort prevent irritation. If you have to stand for a while, go for comfortable shoes and a relaxed stance without locked knees.
Seniors categories and tournaments
Many regional associations run seniors or over-50 categories in their championships and rankings; with the World Seniors Darts Championship there's a televised tournament of its own for players aged 50 and over. In everyday club life, all age groups play in the same teams, because in darts it's your form that counts, not your year of birth.
Darts as a meeting place
For many older players, darts night is more than sport: fixed dates, conversations, a reason to get out of the house. Clubs value experienced members as scorers, captains and organisers; if you no longer want to play every week yourself, you stay involved through tasks within the club. Venues that open in the afternoon also offer darts sessions for pensioners; on DartCloud the opening hours are listed for every venue.
